The Ruffwear Overcoat Fuse™ is made for days when a basic dog coat simply isn’t enough. It adds warmth, handles changeable weather, and comes with a built-in harness. That combination keeps things easy: put it on, clip in the leash, and go – no extra layers and no separate harness to fit over or underneath the vest.

Its look is intentionally functional and rugged. The 640D shell is built to handle brush, undergrowth, and rougher terrain better than a delicate outer fabric, while 120 g insulation helps keep your dog comfortably warm in colder conditions.

Warm enough for cold days without feeling bulky

The 120 g insulation is made from recycled polyester and provides noticeably more warmth than a simple fleece layer. At the same time, the Overcoat Fuse™ is still designed for movement and doesn’t feel like a heavy, stiff winter coat.

That makes it a great option for dogs that get cold easily but still stay active outdoors. How much warmth your dog needs will always depend on coat type, undercoat, body build, age, and activity level.

Made for woods, trails, and brush

The 640D polyester shell is weather- and abrasion-resistant and finished with a PFAS-free water-repellent treatment. That makes it practical for damp conditions and for outings through woods, brush, or rougher terrain.

One thing to keep in mind: water-repellent is not the same as waterproof. For prolonged heavy rain, a dedicated rain shell is still the better choice. For cold, changeable weather, the Overcoat Fuse™ works especially well when you want both warmth and a rugged outer layer.

The harness is built right in

This is where the Overcoat Fuse™ really simplifies things. There’s no need to add a separate harness over or underneath the vest.

You get two leash attachment points:

an aluminum V-ring on the back
a reinforced webbing loop on the chest

That gives you the option to clip in at the back or the front, depending on how you prefer to walk your dog. With insulated dog apparel, that 2-in-1 setup is especially convenient because there are no extra straps running over multiple layers.

Designed to work with different dog shapes

The vest silhouette gives generous coverage through the body and extends over the hips and thighs. Ruffwear designed the fit to work across a wide range of dog shapes.

Proper fit still matters. The integrated harness should feel secure without restricting movement. Your dog’s shoulders and front legs should move freely, and the straps shouldn’t sit too close to the armpits.

For broad, deep-chested, or very lean dogs, it’s especially important to check both chest girth and back length.

Small details that make a difference outside

Two low-profile zippered pockets provide space for small essentials. Reflective accents add visibility in low-light conditions, and two loops allow you to attach the Ruffwear Beacon™ Safety Light.

That makes the Overcoat Fuse™ not just warm and rugged, but genuinely practical for darker, colder months.

When would we recommend the Overcoat Fuse™?

If you want a dog vest that does more than simply add warmth, the Overcoat Fuse™ is a very strong option. It makes particular sense for dogs that stay active outdoors in cold, changeable weather and for anyone who prefers coat and harness in one easy setup.

If your dog only needs a lighter layer for milder conditions, a fleece option such as the Timberline Fuse™ will be the better choice.

How to find the right size

For the Ruffwear Overcoat Fuse™, chest girth is the primary measurement for choosing the right size. Measure around the widest part of your dog’s rib cage.

Between sizes?
Ruffwear recommends using the back length as an additional reference to determine the better fit.

Our fit tip

Fit is especially important with the Overcoat Fuse™ because the vest also functions as your dog’s harness. It should sit securely against the body without restricting movement.

Allow approximately two fingers on each side of the chest between your dog and the harness. There should also be around four finger widths between the front leg and strap to help prevent the strap from sitting too close to the armpit or rubbing while your dog moves.

Once fitted, make sure your dog can move the shoulders and front legs freely and that the vest stays securely in place while moving.

Note: Ruffwear’s metric XXS back-length measurement in the supplied size chart is inconsistent with its inch measurement. 10.5–14.5″ converts to approximately 27–37 cm, which is the metric range used here.
