The Front Range™ Day Pack by Ruffwear isn’t just a dog backpack. It’s a fully integrated trail system built for dogs who don’t just follow – they lead, carry, and explore with you. Based on Ruffwear’s popular Front Range™ Harness, this pack adds load-carrying capability without compromising on comfort, movement, or balance.

We put it to the test during a three-day hut tour with our dog Nikita – and it delivered. No slipping, no pressure points, no fatigue. Just natural movement, stable load distribution, and a dog who was clearly part of the team.

What makes the Front Range™ Day Pack different?

At its core, this pack is built around the trusted Front Range™ Harness – complete with five adjustment points, foam-padded straps, and a secure anatomical fit. Attached to it are radially cut saddlebags, strategically shaped to shift the weight forward. This creates a passive compression system that keeps the load stable and close to the body, even during fast movement or uneven terrain.

Each saddlebag includes stretch-mesh inner pockets for tidy organization and dual YKK zippers that are smooth and glove-friendly. Reflective trim adds low-light visibility, and there's an integrated light loop for attaching Ruffwear’s The Beacon™ safety light.

Comfort meets load stability – for trail-savvy dogs

The backbone of the Front Range™ Day Pack is a foam-padded harness with a fully adjustable belly strap, ensuring a close, secure fit that evenly distributes weight. The design allows your dog to move naturally – with no bouncing, twisting, or rubbing.

On the back, a low-profile padded lift handle helps you assist your dog up rocky sections, into a vehicle, or across technical terrain. Three leash attachment points – an aluminum V-ring on the back and two reinforced webbing loops (one chest, one rear) – offer flexible options for control, no matter your route or your dog’s style of movement.

Who is this pack for – and when should you look elsewhere?

The Front Range™ Day Pack is made for dogs who love the outdoors and enjoy having a job on the trail. If your dog is already used to wearing a harness and comfortably carrying lightweight gear, this pack is a natural next step. Ideal for day hikes, alpine overnights, or multi-hour nature missions.

However, this is not a dog-carrying backpack – it's built for dogs to carry their own essentials. If your pup has mobility issues, is recovering from surgery, or isn’t accustomed to wearing gear, it’s best to check with your vet first. And always follow the golden rule: never load more than 10% of your dog’s body weight.
