Of course, the best thing for us is when our dogs are completely free to explore new environments and move around freely. This is only rarely possible with our two wild dogs, but there are of course also opportunities for 100% retrievable dogs, especially on vacation, such as on the campsite, where appropriate security (leash obligation) is mandatory.

To be able to offer your dog as much freedom as possible in such environments or even at a wild camping spot while at the same time reliably securing it, we chose the Knot-a-Hitch™ system from RUFFWEAR.

It is super quick to install - we either use two trees or attach one side to the roof rack of our car and the other to a tree with the tree strap.

The advantage here is very simple: you simply attach your dog's lead to the free-hanging carabiner - this also prevents possible tangles and allows your dog to move freely.

Why RUFFWEAR Knot-a-Hitch™ free-running system and not a ground anchor and cross-country leash?

We have already tried a few things to secure the dog at campsites and wild spots:

• Hooking the cross-country leash into the bumper - works to a certain extent, but you always have to check whether the dog has become tangled or the leash is stuck under the tire
• Leash wrapped around a tree - dog gets tangled up and likes to wrap the whole tree in it
• Ground anchor - only works in the ground, on stone and gravel it becomes difficult to impossible
